Things must be rough over there in Indiana May 7, 2008

During yesterday’s primary, there was a news article that was labeled Nuns with dated ID turned away at polls. This is from the recent supreme court decision that you need to show ID at the polling place. In the article, it noted that these sisters were in their 80s and 90s. 80 and 90 year old nuns have no reason to have a valid drivers license. They showed a passport but that was considered unacceptable. Voter fraud is an issue, but a group of nuns? Seriously? You know, that is just wrong and a sign of the times in this current political climate. When you are disenfranchising nuns, that is just wrong. What tops it is what came from the Indiana Secretary of State Late Tuesday, Secretary of State Todd Rokita was unapologetic.

“Indiana’s Voter ID Law applies to everyone. From all accounts that we’ve heard, the sisters were aware of the photo ID requirements and chose not to follow them,” he said in a statement released by his office.

WOW! It might be Catholic guilt, but I have learned that you never cross a nun!

What I saw on the way to work April 2, 2008

I saw a posting on the Sam Adams Alliance Website concerning electronic voting. This remains a very controversial issue given this political environment. This links to a Washington Post article from 2 years ago that the voting machines from Diebold were not reliable. This is rather disheartening because voting is an effective way of voicing our concerns to the powers that be. When I vote in Kane County, Illinois, it is done by electronic ballot, but there is a paper trail that is established. If the machine goes down, the election judges have assured that the paper information is removed, tallied, and then a new machine is brought in. This is ridicious that we are still debating Bush v. Gore related concerns from 8 years ago. It is also ridicious that people are disenfranchised. All you got to do is tally the numbers. Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, the first place in the Country to vote in the elections and can tally in less than 60 seconds.
